🖲️Insights on Keyboards! ⌨️
And frankly, I've discovered that there are a lot of things that are both important and misunderstood in the space when it comes to choosing your next typing machine. Lets get started with a brief overview of what I am using before we talk about how i got there!
Framework Laptop 13- Linux English Keyboard
Nuphy Air 75 V2 - with White Keycaps
Across both these keyboards I have put dozens of hours typing things like - essays, code, technical report writing or any other activity you could imagine a computer doing. Note that I also listed my laptops keyboard because I fundamentally view it as equal to the experience of using your own custom keyboard in many ways. For one - you will definitely end up using your laptop keyboard far more then you will your mechanical since its more portable on average.
Regardless lets get to the two factors I consider to be the most important when it comes to selecting a board - size and ergonomics - the latter being a bit more important then the prior.
Ergonomics in this situation refers to a keyboards ability to perform its duty while maximizing the comfort of the user - whether that be delaying exhaustion or avoiding the onset of something like carpal tunnel - its incredible vital that the board you choose matches your comfort profile. There are a lot of people who prefer taller boards whether that be because of them having larger hands or whatever else - and there are a lot of people who prefer slimmer keyboards, due to having smaller wrists or whatever else. For me this manifested itself in a serious preference towards low profile mechanical keyboards - as they offer minimal clearance off of my desk while still offering all the functionality and comfort of a full profile keyboard.
Size in this situation refers to the quantity of keys present in a board - this is normally demonstrated via a percentage regarding the size of the keyboard with respect to the amount of keys - a 100% keyboard has all the keys, a number row as well as pad and a function row. For me I found the healthiest balance of size and form factor with a 75% keyboard as it offered the number row - which offsets the need for a number pad in my use case - as well as a function row making it ideal for more power user based tasks. Not to mention this also allowed it to match my laptop keyboard making muscle memory easier to achieve. Note that this is also crucial for people who have more limited desk space such as college students or those working in more cramped offices.
Some additional factors to consider which are fairly self explanatory are the Aesthetic as well as the Sound a board can produce - which help to create a more complete typing experience by shifting it from a work task - to something you actually enjoy doing. I hope this mini guide helps you choose your next board - REMEMBER - its OK to experiment but never do something due to a fear of missing out (FOMO) - such as purchasing a group buy or using some other shady website- buy what works but also maximizes the fun!
